The concept of having a foundation applies to more than pianists at small churches. Have you ever heard someone just asking for answers, and you know the Bible has the perfect response for them and their situation, but you can’t for the life of you remember where to find it? If only you had the perfect Bible verse ready to spout when needed!
In addition to being slow to memorize complete hymns, I’m a bit slow at memorizing Bible verses. But I have built a foundation of general knowledge about the Bible through the years. I have gotten to the point where I at least know vaguely where to find appropriate verses, relevant parables and stories, and many of the comforting promises of God. (And smart phones with Bible apps are a really great invention too!)
I have built a foundation of scriptural knowledge, and while I may not be able to recite book, chapter and verse upon demand, I know where to start looking. Just as knowledge of the hymnbook structure makes finding the right song easier, knowledge of the Bible makes finding the right verses easier.
Spiritual foundations are important for our own personal spiritual growth, and essential for sharing God’s word with others.
…from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
