So after God has stepped in and disciplined or corrected us, we need to make sure to follow up on these corrections with self-discipline in the future. The verse below is worded slightly differently in various translations: self-discipline, self-control, sound judgment, or sound mind. All of these refer to us using our own minds to direct our actions.
When a singer is corrected by a teacher, they then have to practice singing correctly multiple times before the right way is ingrained in their minds. When I catch myself making a mistake in a piano passage, I try to play it correctly many, many times in a row before being confident that I can do it right every time. Similarly, when we know we have done something wrong, we need to correct that action, and then consciously practice doing it right multiple times if we want to keep from making that error again.
The more you lie, the easier it becomes to lie. The opposite is also true - the more you tell the truth, the easier it becomes to tell the truth. For whatever “entangling sin” you struggle with, practice doing the right thing. Discipline yourself to pursue the correct path, and you will grow stronger in your Christian behavior.
For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.
