Discipline - Day 15

We can pursue discipline ourselves, but sometimes God Himself will step in and help us out. As the verses below hint, we probably won’t find it very pleasant at the time! We may not think of it as God “helping” us, but sometimes we need a bit of correction, and we just aren’t capable of correcting ourselves without a nudge here or there.

Just as we have teachers that make us aware of our failings and errors, like the Russian girls’ choir director, God and the Holy Spirit can teach us where we need to improve. Sometimes the Spirit will open our eyes to the truth, as a still, small voice that pricks our conscious. Other times, a stronger prompt is needed. When we fail to follow God’s law, we often find out that there was a good reason for that law! We get ourselves in trouble, find ourselves miserable, or just plain embarrass ourselves. These consequences often provide some rather effective discipline.

Self-discipline, or self-control, is vital to learn in order to grow as a Christian. But unlike many self-help regimens, we also have a real, living Teacher to help us out in exactly the areas we need it. God knows His plan for us, and knows the excellent outcome He has created for us. Let Him help us become the best we can be.

God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.
