I first had the idea of writing about my experiences as a church pianist back in the early 1990s. So many times, I would think of something funny, or something inspirational, or both, related to being a church musician, and I would think, “I should really write that down.”
I’ve learned a lot about being a church pianist, and I’ve also learned a lot about being a Christian. So, I started writing notes and comments to myself, and before long, had enough to start a book.
Musical trends have come and gone, I’ve moved and changed churches multiple times, and I’ve even learned to play new instruments. I’ve edited and re-edited my thoughts, tried to get them into shape, and now have decided the best format is this online site, available for anyone to read as a set of 100 daily devotionals, interspersed with 40 classic hymns, most with videos of me playing them on piano.
Some of these thoughts may be silly, some may be profound (maybe only to me), but here they are. From dropping the hymn book on the piano during a prayer, to greenery catching fire during a wedding, these thoughts cover nearly everything that can go wrong in the life of a church musician. But God teaches us through our mistakes, if we are willing to listen. So, here are my confessions.
